I have read the ACT Government’s claims about kangaroos being overabundant and damaging the grasslands by ‘overgrazing’. I reject this claim. I have seen no evidence, on either the Canberra reserves themselves or in all the material published by the ACT government or anywhere else, that kangaroos are either ‘overabundant’ in Canberra’s nature reserves, or doing any damage whatsoever to the plants and other animals of the grasslands.

In fact, the only study funded by the ACT government to actually assess the impact of kangaroos across a diversity of other grassland species showed their impact, at maximum numbers present, was a beneficial one. This finding concurs with independent expert research and advice that recognises kangaroos, at natural (unmanaged) numbers, as a keystone species essential to the health and wellbeing of this continent’s biodiversity.

I note that independent expert research also suggests that the Earless Dragon species is especially dependent on the diversity of ground cover maintained by kangaroo grazing patterns. I am keenly aware that, since the annual slaughter began, the population of Earless Dragons on Canberra reserves has further crashed from ‘Endangered’ to ‘Critically Endangered’ while the Earless Dragon population in Queanbeyan Nature Reserve (part of the same grasslands system as Canberra but where kangaroos are not ‘managed’), is doing well.

I also reject the government’s claim that kangaroos are killed humanely because the killing adheres to a Code of Practice. This claim is cynical in the extreme because the Code of Practice itself permits cruelty by allowing the killing of females with pouch young and young at foot, along with the cruel methods it MANDATES for the killing of those joeys.

The nature reserves should be nature reserves and NOT killing fields in which kangaroos and joeys are slaughtered en masse. These actions are not the actions of a ‘progressive’ or even a civilised government.

I do not want a response from you that merely repeats the government’s ludicrous claims. I want to know when this unconscionable violence is going to stop, when the killing of this keystone species, the cruelty to these sentient, sensitive animals, and the trauma to so many members of the Canberra public is going to stop.

I want to know when the legislated ACT Kangaroo Management Plan and its Kangaroo Kill Calculator is going to be repealed, and when those responsible for the sixteen years of this senseless massacre are going to be held to account.
