Edit this submission to make it unique! Some ideas to add: - Do you have concerns about the killing of kangaroos in the ACT? - Have you ever had to wait a long time for a ranger to attend an injured kangaroo? - Are you a wildlife carer who wants to be able to rescue and rehabilitate eastern grey kangaroos and their joeys?

Submission to the Buru (Eastern Grey Kangaroo): Draft Controlled Native Species Management Plan
Dear Conservator of Flora and Fauna, I am writing to make a submission to the public consultation for the Buru (Eastern Grey Kangaroo): Draft Controlled Native Species Management Plan, October 2025. I strongly oppose the plan’s primary goal. Killing kangaroos for “conservation”, development, or other economic benefit is unjustifiable and entirely unnecessary. I urge the ACT Government to immediately end the annual kangaroo cull and cease the issuing of licences to harm kangaroos. Until kangaroo killing in the ACT is ended, the Plan must be updated to include the following: Rural landholder culls: Data of the killing must be published annually on the ACT Government website, including a breakdown of male/female and the number of pouch young. Independent veterinary audits must be conducted and the reports published. Urban developments: New urban developments must maintain habitat connectivity and include safe road crossing options. Coexistence must be the primary goal when addressing the kangaroos who will be displaced by the development. The number of kangaroos killed due to development must be published annually on the ACT Government website. Pouch young: Cull reports must specify the number of furred and unfurred pouch young killed. Carcass utilisation: No carcasses from the annual conservation cull are to be used for the purposes of 1080 baits that then go on to poison dingoes in Namadgi National Park. Vehicle collision mitigation: Safe crossing infrastructure and collision mitigation measures must be mandatory in the design of new and upgraded roads. Collision mitigation measures must be explored and implemented as a matter of urgency at collision hotspots. Rescue & rehabilitation: ACT wildlife carers must be permitted to rescue, rehabilitate and release kangaroos and their joeys. Until then, a live tally of joeys transferred into care in NSW must be published on the ACT Government ‘Living with Kangaroos’ webpage. Injured kangaroos: The Urban Wildlife Team must be expanded to include an absolute minimum of two on-call rangers, one for northside and one for southside, outside of business hours. Response times (time between a call of injured wildlife and attendance by an Urban Wildlife Officer) must be recorded and published. Euthanasia permissions must be extended to licensed wildlife carers to prevent the prolonged suffering of injured kangaroos. Thank you for reading my submission. I look forward to hearing back from you regarding how these recommendations will be addressed in the final version of this Plan.
